What is How To ADU?

If you didn’t find an answer, you can ask any question you like in our Facebook Group where dozens of experienced homeowners and contractors can share their experience with you.

What is an ADu?

You can build an extra house or an additional apartment on the property where you live, and rent it out.

An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a small residence on the same lot as a single-family dwelling. ADUs and Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) are ways to create more housing in California – they provide revenue streams for you while increasing the availability of rental housing in your area.

These are commonly referred to by a host of names like in-law suites or granny flats, and they’re an important part of how local and state governments are responding to the lack of housing in many regions of the country.

The exact definition of an ADU depends on where you live; the laws and the policies that bring those laws to life are still developing every day.

We exist to help you take advantage of any opportunities that may exist for you to build an ADU on your property.

What is a junior adu?

A Junior ADU is a small residential unit, up to 500 square feet, contained entirely within an existing single-family home.

Many homeowners are creating Junior ADUs by converting an extra room, a basement, or a garage into accommodation. There are several ways to do this, including adding an efficiency kitchen and exterior door to an existing, legal bedroom. A junior ADU may include its own private bathroom or may share a bathroom with the house.

These are the kinds of details we’ll explore with qualified candidates based on the specific opportunities of their property.

What does HOW TO ADU do?

We help homeowners by finding opportunities for them to build ADUs.

Take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity for homeowners by using our many ADU resources:

Why doES HOW TO ADU help?

We have two goals:

  1. We want to solve the housing crisis

  2. We want to make a living by helping homeowners build their assets and their community

The housing sector is broken. Rents are rising and homes in some areas are in such high demand that full price offers get outbid on a weekly basis while hard working families are underhoused.

In previous decades, the government heavily subsidized the construction of new homes to accommodate a growing number of American homeowners. But today, the most viable solution to the crisis is incentivizing homeowners to build valuable additions to their properties.

That’s why one of our founders built his own ADU. And he handled all the permitting and construction contracting himself.

The process was very difficult, and he realized there was an opportunity to help other homeowners and accelerate the rate of growth of ADUs.

Can I build an adu on my own?

You can contact your local city and county officials to permit and build an ADU on your own.

We are here to help identify opportunities first-timers might miss, in both the permitting and funding process.

It’s free and non-binding to fill out our form, and we’ll let you know what assistance you qualify for.

And if you ever get stuck and need a little push, it’s easy to book a call with us.

How much does it cost?

Most homeowners use How To ADU for free.

We create free articles, videos, and a community where people can help each other.

We also offer short free calls and longer paid consulting calls.

When it’s appropriate, we introduce you to professional service providers like licensed contractors, designers, and lenders. We secure special deals for you with those providers, and are rewarded by the providers at no additional cost to you.

Building an ADU is a big project with many moving pieces. We are here to guide you through the process as much as we can.
